  • Angelo Mathews is a Sri Lankan cricketer who has also served as the captain in various tournaments. He was a member of the 2014 T20 World Cup-winning squad of Sri Lanka. He became the first cricketer to be dismissed timed out in international cricket.
  • During his childhood, he used to play cricket and athletics and competed in provincial and national athletic tournaments in hurdles and 100-meter events; however, his family liked cricket more and the training sessions of both games started to clash, hence he chose cricket and became a professional cricketer.

  • He started playing in school cricket and played in many teams of St. Joseph’s College, Colombo. On 10 November 2006, he made his first-class debut for Colts Cricket Club, and on 28 February 2007, he played his first T20 match for the same club. On 16 September 2005, he played his debut List A (one-day) match.

  • Mathews’ wife, Heshani Silva, knew Angelo Mathews when she was studying at St. Bridget’s Convent, Colombo. She often met him at the badminton tournaments as she used to play badminton during her teenage years. They dated each other for six and a half years.

  • Mathews’s wedding with Heshani Silva was a star-studded event with then Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa and Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa signing as eyewitnesses.   • Mathews got out on a duck on his ODI debut and failed to take any wicket for 24 runs. He made his first ODI half-century on 12 January 2009 by scoring 52 runs not out against Zimbabwe. On 12 September 2009, he achieved his first 5-wicket haul with 6 wickets for 20 runs against India. On 16 November 2014, he scored his maiden ODI hundred with 139 runs not out against India and claimed 2 wickets for 33 runs.

  • Angelo Mathews scored 100 runs in 6 matches at an average of 33.33 and a strike rate of 142.86 and took 5 wickets in the 2014 T20 World Cup which was Sri Lanka’s first T20 World Cup title.   • On 6 November 2023, during the match against Bangladesh in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Angelo Mathews was coming out to bat after the dismissal of Sadeera Samarawickrama when he was given out due to the timed out rule which is ICC Law 40.1.1 and states that ‘After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement.’

  • After coming out in the ground, when he was tightening his helmet strap, it broke off which caused him to ask for another helmet due to which he got late to come on the crease. Bangladeshi player Najmul Hossain Shanto discussed the timing delay with his captain Shakib Al Hasan who then went to the umpire and appealed for Mathews’ dismissal.
