Some Lesser Known Facts About Daljeet Kaur

• Daljeet Kaur was an Indian actress who mainly worked in the Punjabi film industry. She worked in around 70 Punjabi films and 10 Hindi films in her acting career spanning 40 years. After battling a prolonged mental illness, Daljeet Kaur died at the age of 69 on 17 November 2022.

• While she was still a child, her family moved from Siliguri, West Bengal, to their native place, Aitiana village in Raikot, Ludhiana, Punjab.

• She was good at studies and sports in her school days. Daljeet was also good at arts.

• Although her parents wanted her to become a doctor, she desired to become a civil servant in childhood.

• She was a national-level Kabaddi and Hockey player in her college days. Meanwhile, she also got inclined towards acting and joined FTII, Pune, to pursue an acting course.

• While studying at FTII, she was the batchmate of the Indian actor Satish Shah. A few days after joining the institute, Daljeet bagged a role in Kundan Shah’s short film Bonga (1976).

• In the same year, she played the role of Laajo in the Punjabi film Daaj. The film was a huge hit.

• In 1978, she played a cameo in the Punjabi film Giddha. The film starred Dharmendra in the lead role.

• In the same year, she featured in the Malayalam film Tharu Oru Janmam Koodi opposite Prem Nazir.

• Daljeet played a double role in the superhit Punjabi film Saidan Jogan, which forced the female audience to Punjab’s cinema. Following the release of the film, special seats were reserved for the female audience and families visiting theatres in Punjab. Having similarity with the Bollywood film ‘Seeta Aur Geeta,’ the film is a story of twin girls- a gipsy and a college student. She earned praise from the audience and critics for playing the dual role with much ease.

• Subsequently, she played the female lead in the mega-hit Punjabi film Putt Jattan De (1983).

• From the 1970s to the 1990s, she gave back-to-back superhits like Roop Shaqinan Da (1983), Maamla Garbar Hai (1983), Laajo (1983), Ishq Nimana (1984), Kee Banu Duniyan Da (1986), Patola (1988), and Anakh Jattan Dee (1990).

• Later, she starred in acclaimed films like Udeeka Saun Diyan (1991), Jatt Punjab Da (1992), and Panchayat (1996).

• Heartbroken after her husband’s demise, Daljeet quit working in films during the late 90s.

• She made a comeback to the Punjabi film industry with the film Jee Aaya Nu in 2002. She played the role of Daljeet in the film.

• Next, she featured in Punjabi films like Heer Ranjha and Singh Vs Kaur.

• In 2022, she was featured in the film 22 Chamkila Forever, which was her last film. Among her last films, was the film titled Moga to Melbourne via Chandigarh, a satire on Punjab youths migrating abroad, which was conceptualised and written by now Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Although the film was shot in 2013, its release was delayed and it remains unreleased till 2022.

• She also worked in a few Hindi films like Yari Dushmani (1980), Jeene Nahi Doonga (1984), Dacait (1987), and Ek Aur Ek Gyarah (2003).

• Apart from acting, she was also good at singing.

• She was honoured with several awards for her contribution to Punjabi cinema.

• She was fluent in four languages- Hindi, English, Punjabi, and Bengali.

• Daljeet also featured on the covers of magazines like Women’s Era Magazine.

• According to some media sources, Daljeet was diagnosed with a neurological problem following which she became a victim of dementia, a slow-improving memory-impairing disease. She died on 17 November 2022 after fighting the disease for many years. She was at her cousin brother Harjinder Singh Khangura’s house in Kasba Sudhaar Bazaar in Ludhiana, Punjab, at the time of her death. Her last rites were performed at village Sadhar’s crematorium on the day of her demise.

• Many Punjabi celebrities expressed grief over her death on social media. Mourning her demise, the Punjabi actress Neeru Bajwa took to Instagram and wrote,

• Some media sources also claimed that Daljeet was suffering from a brain tumour and was in a deep coma since 2021.
