ControversiesRemoved as the BCCI President: In January 2017, he was removed as the President of the BCCI by the Supreme Court of India. Supreme Court appointed Lodha Committee stated that Government officials should not be a member of the administrative body of any sports. Anurag Thakur resisted this decision a lot and even refused to agree to the Supreme Court order. The Supreme Court ordered Anurag Thakur to apologize or he would be arrested. Anurag Thakur then issued an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court and stepped down.

Wrestlers protests: On 3 May 2023, Vinesh Phogat, during the wrestlers protests against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, levelled charges against Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur for suppressing the matter and said that it is tough to stand against a powerful person who is misusing his power and position. She said, "We ended our protest after talking to Union Sports Minister (Anurag Thakur), and all the athletes had told him about the sexual harassment.
