Some Lesser Known Facts About Anurag Maloo

• Anurag Maloo is an Indian mountain climber, social activist, engineer, and startup mentor, who hit the headlines in April 2023 after he fell into a deep crevasse at Mount Annapurna and was declared missing.

• After completing his schooling, Anurag enrolled on the Bansal Classes in Kota, Rajasthan, where he took coaching for the IIT-JEE examinations till 2007. He secured AIR 6701 in the 2007 all-India IIT-JEE exams; however, he could not make it to the final merit list.

• For academic excellence, Anurag won the CET Merit Annual Scholarship in 2007.

• In March 2009, Anurag was employed by a Manipur-based NGO named North East Centre for Environmental Education and Research (NECEER). There, he worked till February 2011 as a Media and Publications, Campaign Outreach, and Sponsorship coordinator.

• In June 2009, Anurag was employed as an intern by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) in New Delhi; he worked there as an intern till July 2009.

• Anurag joined the Career Launcher in August 2009. There, he worked as an intern till May 2010.

• From August 2009 to June 2010, Anurag Maloo served as a student ambassador at IBM – The Great Mind Challenge (TGMC).

• In June 2010, Anurag joined Apex SoftWeb Pvt Ltd, where he worked as an intern till July 2010.

• Anurag began working at Opera Campus Crew in June 2010. He worked there till May 2011.

• Anurag attended the Chancellor’s Camp at the Mangalayatan University in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, in 2010. He was selected for the camp by the vice-chancellor of the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU).

• In September 2010, he was appointed as Google Health Speaks’ ambassador. He served as an ambassador till December 2010.

• As per the mandate of the Aman Ki Asha, a joint Indo-Pakistan peace project, Maloo was shortlisted as one of the Indians to visit Pakistan in 2012.

• In March 2012, he was employed by a Panchgani-based youth organisation named IofC Lmad, where he worked as a senior youth development coordinator till May 2014.

• In May 2013, Anurag Maloo joined the IIT Bombay-founded InOpen Technologies Pvt. Ltd, where he worked as a manager of Educational Development in Mumbai and Rajasthan till August 2013.

• In the same year, Anurag Maloo became the 2041 Antarctic Youth Ambassador from India following which he was selected to represent India in the International Antarctica Expedition.

• Anurag Maloo was shortlisted to attend an intense 15-day brainstorming session conducted by Jagriti Yatra in December 2013. Jagriti Yatra is a programme in which experts from various walks of life come together for an 8,000-kilometre railway journey in India.

• In an interview, Anurag talked about his interest in mountaineering and said that he was motivated to pursue a career in mountain climbing after he read about the ace Indian mountaineer Bachendri Pal, who became the first woman from India to climb Mount Everest.

• He joined GreenNGood.com as a sustainability consultant in February 2014.

• From 8 October 2014 to 11 March 2020, Anurag Maloo worked as regional manager of South and Central Asia at Techstars. He was also made a global facilitator, community leader, and organiser there.

• In Seattle, US, Anurag assumed the post of community leader at Techstars Startup Weekend on 8 October 2014.

• From October 2014 to June 2015, Anurag served as the regional manager of India and South and Central Asia at UP Global in New Delhi.

• He began working as a startup mentor at an American business incubator named The Founder Institute in October 2015.

• In May 2016, he was employed by Human Circle, where Anurag worked as a mentor till February 2020.

• He began working as a startup digest curator in June 2017 at the Techstars-owned StartupDigest.

• At Seedstars, Anurag began working as a business mentor and startup coach in July 2017.

• In January 2022, he joined two companies, On Deck as a founding fellow, and Global Shapers’ Ajmer hub as a founding curator.

• He became the regional director of the Asia-Pacific region and vice president of Global Partnerships and Business Development at Seedstars in January 2022.

• To support and spread the word about the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, Anurag Maloo decided to summit all fourteen eight-thousander peaks in the world as well as the seven highest peaks in the seven continents.

• In October 2022, Anurag managed to summit Mount Kun (7,077 meters above sea level) and Mount Nun (7,135 meters above sea level).

• Later, he climbed Mount Ama Dablam (6,812 metres above sea level) and Mount Imja Tse (also known as Island Peak) in Nepal.

• In Uttarakhand, he successfully climbed 5,359 metres of Mount Satopanth in 2022.

• Thereafter, he said that he would climb Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain, in 2023 under the Finding My Everest Challenge.

• He arrived in Nepal in 2023 to summit Mount Annapurna; however, while descending from the mountain on 17 April 2023, he slipped and fell into a 6,000-metre-deep crevasse between Camp III and Camp II after he caught the wrong rope. After he was declared missing, Anurag’s brother, Aashish Maloo, started an online petition, urging the Nepalese authorities to begin a search and rescue operation to evacuate Anurag. Anurag was evacuated from the crevasse on 20 April 2023. As per sources, he was found 300 meters down the crevasse and survived only because the icy winds could not penetrate the thick walls of the crevasse. Thereafter, he was taken to Pokhara City, Nepal, where he was admitted to the Manipal Hospital in critical condition. Talking about it, in an interview, a Nepalese authority said,
  

  Anurag has been rescued. He is alive but his condition is critical. Right now the focus is on his treatment. His condition is critical. This was expected, as he had fallen into a crevasse at 300 metres, from a height of 6,000 metres. We are hoping for his speedy recovery.”

 

• Following his evacuation, the Nepalese authorities handed over a bill of Rs. 70 lacs to Anurag’s family following which his family wrote a letter to the Indian government as well as the Rajasthan government, seeking their assistance in raising the money.

• Anurag Maloo is a travel enthusiast. He has visited and explored many countries like Switzerland, Egypt, Cambodia, and the United States of America.

• Anurag is multi-lingual and is well-versed in four languages, Hindi, English, Marathi, and Marwari.
