Some Lesser Known Facts About Nethra Kumanan

• In her childhood days, Nethra Kumanan used to be majorly engaged in tennis, basketball, and cycling as a youngster.

• Nethra Kumanan started her sailing journey at a summer class in 2010 at Tamil Nadu Sailing Association’s ‘Summer Sailing Camp’ and that’s when she decided to pursue it as her profession.

• Nethra chose to complete her 11th and 12th standard from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) as she thought it would be better for her to manage her sailing career if she chose open schooling.

• Before becoming a professional sailor, Nethra Kumanan learnt Bharatnatyam for six years from the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee Alarmel Valli.

• Nethra Kumanan is one of the 13 Indian sailors who have represented the country of India at the Olympics.

• Nethra Kumanan is the first Indian woman to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in sailing in 2020.

• Nethra Kumanan was the first Asian at the Olympic qualifier event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

• In the Tokyo Olympics, Nethra played in the Laser Radial category and finished at the 35th rank.

• In the same year, she became the first Indian woman to win a bronze medal at the Hempel Sailing World Cup Series which was held in Miami, U.S.A.

• Nethra represented India at the Asian Games in 2014 which was held in South Korea where she finished seventh in the competition.

• Nethra Kumanan participated in the 2015-2016 ASAF Youth Sailing Championship where she won the gold medal.

• In 2017, Nethra Kumanan joined Anna University for her Mechanical Engineering under the sports quota but she had to drop out after a year to prepare for the Asian Games.

• In the same year, Nethra Kumanan represented India in the 2017 Laser U21 World Championships which was held in Nieuwpoort, Belgium where she finished in the 39th position.

• In 2018, she participated in the fifth edition of the Sailing World Championship which was held in Aarhus, Denmark. Nethra Kumanan scored the 78 rank.

• In the same year, Nethra Kumanan participated in the Asian Games which was held in Jakarta, Indonesia where she finished at the 5th rank.

• In 2019, she participated in the ILCA Laser Radial Women’s World Championship where she finished at the 66th rank.

• Nethra Kumanan was the second Indian player after Vishnu Saravanan to qualify for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics at the Last Chance Regatta which is an Olympic qualifier held in Hyeres, France on 26 April 2024. Nethra played under the quota under the Emerging Nations Programme.

• In the same year, Nethra Kumanan represented India in the Asian Laser Championship which was held in Singapore and she finished at the 4th position.

• In 2020, Nethra Kumanan participated in the Laser Senior European Championship which was held in Gdansk, Poland where she scored the 56th rank.

• In 2021, Nethra Kumanan participated in the Hempel World Cup Series ‘Allianz Regatta’ which was held in Medemblik, Netherlands where she finished 41st rank.

• In 2023, Nethra Kumanan represented India at the ILCA Senior European Championships & Open European Trophy which was held in Andora, Italy. Nethra finished at the 24th rank.

• Nethra Kumanan participated in the ILCA 6 Women’s & Men’s World Championships which was held in Texas, USA, followed by the 2023 Allianz Sailing World Championships which was held in Hague, Netherlands. She scored the 70 and 51 rank respectively.
