She is of German, English, French, and Slovak-Hungarian descent.

She grew up on her ancestral five-acre, non-working farm in Copley, Ohio where her family has been living since the 1800s.

Her great-grandfather served as the constable of Copley.

She was raised as a catholic and would often ask her parents about the end of the world

Her father ran their family’s auto parts store and has worked as an art museum janitor. Her mother worked as an ER (Emergency Room) nurse at the Cleveland Clinic.

In July 1983, her family adopted her sister Morena from El Salvador, which was going through a civil war at the time.

Carrie earned the nickname, ‘Messy Bossy’ because of her occasional inelegance.

After watching her first play ‘Babes in Toyland’ when she was 10 years old, she decided to join a community theatre. Later, when she asked permission from her mother to audition for the theatre, her mother denied it due to her work schedule.

While waiting for the soccer practice to start during her senior year of high school, she auditioned for the play ‘Our Town’ and was selected to play the lead role of Emily Webb.

She played soccer and ran track while studying at the University of Mount Union, Ohio.

Initially, she wanted to study linguistics but later she changed her major 8 times before finally settling for English and Spanish literature with a minor in psychology at the University.

As part of the study abroad program at the University, she studied in San Sebastian, Spain, for a semester.

She visited El Salvador for a social responsibility class with her Professor, Dr. Kramer to work with the Salvadoran Association for Rural Health, an NGO.

She credits her professor, Dr. Hendel of the Department of Theatre at the University to help her prepare for the University/Resident Theatre Auditions (U/RTAs) in Chicago.

While pursuing her post-graduation from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, she worked as a Teacher’s Assistant and earned $9,000 annually.

While studying at the University, she started therapy for her skin-picking behaviour, a habit that she had developed when she was two years old. After finding help from the therapist, she wrote a paper on skin picking for her graduate acting thesis.

After completing her post-graduation, she worked as an apprentice at the American Players Theatre, Wisconsin for four years.

She has worked in various theatrical plays including ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (2006), ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ (2008), ‘Henry V’ (2009), ‘Three Sisters’ (2012), ‘Mary Jane’ (2017) and ‘Bug’ (2020).

She married her husband in the Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago soon after the emergency gall bladder surgery of Tracy Letts. The marriage was officiated by a Lutheran chaplain.

During the TV show, ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’ in 2017, Carrie revealed that they married in the hospital because their marriage license required them to marry within 60 days of registration, otherwise, they would have to get registered again.
