Some Lesser Known Facts About Derek Dixon

After graduating from Marymount Manhattan College in New York, Derek joined the T. Schreiber Studio, aka The Terry Schreiber Studio, in the same city to work on his acting skills.

He has acted in several plays, including ‘The Lion in Winter,’ ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ and ‘The Boys in the Band.’

Derek got into playwriting while working as an actor. Reading scripts that dealt with raw, real-life situations made him realise he had his own stories to tell, so he started writing.

In 2016, Derek co-wrote and workshopped ‘When Things Are Lost,’ a play inspired by his feelings of being mentally lost and the real-life stories of a close friend.

That same year, he submitted the play ‘When Things Are Lost’ to the Essential Theatre Playwriting Competition and emerged as one of the winners.

In 2019, Dixon met filmmaker Tyler Perry during the grand opening of Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. They had a conversation about Dixon’s career prospects and exchanged phone numbers at the event.

Shortly after, Perry gave him a role in the BET+ series ‘Ruthless,’ which started airing in 2020.

Dixon later claimed that in January 2020, Perry sexually assaulted him and then offered him a recurring role on another show, ‘The Oval.’

According to Dixon, after their initial meeting, Perry began making repeated unwanted sexual advances, which Dixon rejected. Dixon alleged that Perry said his continued role in Perry’s shows depended on keeping him “happy.”

Later, Derek also accused Perry of sending him unwanted and sexually suggestive text messages, including messages asking about sex and commenting on his struggles.

Perry also reportedly told Dixon not to mention their growing friendship to the cast and warned him that it could lead to rumours about how he got the role.

Dixon later claimed that in June 2021, he faced another assault during a meeting at Perry’s home about the series ‘Losing It,’ which Perry had shown interest in producing.

After the incident, Dixon’s physical and mental health declined, and he was later diagnosed with PTSD. According to him, Perry’s team, referred to as “fixers,” offered him a pay raise and a production deal in exchange for his silence and continued work on ‘The Oval.’

In 2023, Dixon worked as an actor and writer for the television series ‘Losing It.’

In 2024, Dixon filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) against Perry, but no action was taken. This led him to leave ‘The Oval’ and decline a writing job offered by Perry.

In June 2025, he filed a $260 million lawsuit against Tyler Perry, accusing him of sexual harassment, assault, and professional retaliation. Perry’s lawyer, however, denied all allegations and called the lawsuit a scam for money.
