  • In 2024, when he was 2.5 years old, Sarwagya Singh Kushwaha began practising chess for four to five hours each day. He spent one hour of this time at a chess training centre in Sagar.
  • The rest of the time, he played online chess games and also watched videos to learn chess tactics.
  • His parents started teaching him chess mainly to help him spend less time on mobile phone or television.

  • According to his father, Siddharth Singh, he started teaching Sarwagya chess in 2024. He then noticed that Sarwagya learned things very fast. After one week of lessons, Sarwagya could name all the chess pieces correctly.

  • Sarwagya started loving the game so much that if his parents woke him at midnight and asked him to play, he would play for hours without stopping.

  • Reportedly, his patience to sit at the board and stay calm for a long time made him different from other kids.

  • His coach, Nitin Chaurasiya, once stated in the media that Sarwagya seemed like a normal kid at first when he joined Nitin’s training centre. Soon, Sarwagya’s chess skills started to stand out.

  • Nitin added in the same conversation that, in the beginning, coaching Sarwagya was hard because he cried easily if corrected. Then, the coach used a different method to lure Sarwagya, such as giving him a toffee or chips for good moves.

  • Sarwagya Singh Kushwaha then started answering questions quickly without any hesitation and playing well against older kids in chess with courage and confidence.

  • In December 2025, Sarwagya made headlines when he became the youngest grandmaster in history to get a FIDE rating. He was ranked 1572nd in the FIDE rankings.

  • He became the only child born in 2022 listed in the rating database.
  • Sarwagya Singh Kushwaha beat the record of three-year-old Anish Sarkar, who became well-known worldwide for showing advanced chess moves in 2024. Anish learned chess by watching YouTube videos and reached a FIDE rating of 1555, the youngest to do so in that year.
  • Sarwagya played his first chess match at the 24th RCC International FIDE Rated Rapid Cup in Mangaluru, where he beat 22-year-old Abhijeet Awasthi, rated 1542.

  • After that, he participated in the FIDE Rapid Rating Chess Championship held in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, where he defeated 29-year-old Shubham Chourasiya, rated 1559.
