Some Lesser Known Facts About Hariram Gupta

• Satya Niketan building was up for 50 years before it collapsed in August 2026. The Gupta family repaired it, and converted it into a paying guest house with the advantage of its proximity to Delhi University.

• Before the collapse, heavy rain was experienced over Delhi and the water accumulated in the basement of the building.

• This could have further damaged the foundation, local residents said. There was also some construction activity taking place in the basement at the same time.

• In subsequent interviews with police, the accused stated that this construction brought about the collapse, and the workers who were preparing the structure confirmed it.

• The building was demolished on 6 September. The rescue on that Sunday started at 1.30 pm and went on through the night.

• By the end of the operation at 5pm on 7 September (a Monday) 12 people had been rescued from the debris.

• Five of them suffered injuries and seven died. The collapsed structure had a boys PG accommodation known as Hostel Daze.

• It was built on approximately 55 square yards on a resettlement colony with five floors (with permission to have only a ground plus one structure).

• Following the demolition, the Guptas could not be found in their house in Gurgaon.

• The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on 7th September suspended five officials after the collapse and warned of stringent action against any official found responsible for the collapse and has ordered immediate sealing of illegal buildings more than four floors.

• The same day, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered a magisterial probe into the incident.

• On 7th September 2026, Delhi Police released a lookout circular against Hariram Gupta and got his passport details to trace him.

• Later that day, 3-4 police teams raided suspected hideouts before arresting Hariram (81), his wife Urmila (75) and their son Mahesh (52) in Bhiwadi in Rajasthan.

• The police also went to Mahesh’s hardware shop and paint shop in Gurugram’s Sector 23 that had remained shut for the last two days.

• The locals claimed it has been around for about 15 years and is a local landmark. The neighbours also mentioned that the Gupta family has some houses in Sector 23 and Palam Vihar.

• A Delhi court sent Hariram and Urmila to 14 days judicial custody on 8 September. Mahesh is likely to be detained by police for a few days.

• The property was registered in Urmila’s name, but Hariram and Mahesh managed it and Hariram had the electricity connection of two of the five floors in his name.

• Hariram retired as a sergeant in the Indian Air Force before turning into a businessman. Investigators also discovered the Gupta family allegedly undertook to make the residents of the hostel sign rental contracts in favour of the owners and against the students.

• One of the phrases, which had been included in the fine print, stated that the PG authorities are not responsible for any casualties or risk to the student.

• Police will ask Mahesh about who wrote this one sided agreement and if the family owns any other buildings that are used as hostels.
