Some Lesser Known Facts About Abha Khatua

  • Abha Khatua’s father is a landless farmer and works as a Sharecropper. Abha also helped her father on the farms and whenever she was at home.
  • During the second wave of COVID-19, Abha returned home to heal from her wrist injury and have some rest. However, she was diagnosed with COVID-19 and had to face many health problems such as breathing difficulty, body pain, and fever.
  • In 2023 Abha became the 4th woman in Indian Athletic history to throw a shot put at a distance beyond 17 meters.
  • In May 2024 she broke the national record for women’s shot put with a throw of 18.41 meters. Before this event, she was a the joint record holder of 18.06m with Manpreet Kaur.
  • Initially, Abha used to represent the West Bengal team at the national level. Despite winning multiple medals and prizes, the state did not provide Abha with a job. Instead, they only gave her empty hopes and promises. Faced with this situation, Abha decided to move to Maharashtra in order to provide for her family. Now, Abha represents Maharashtra at the national level.
  • Abha came from a financially weaker section of society and was determined to make a name for herself and get selected by the Sports Authority of India (SAI). She tried her hand at various athletic events such as 100m, 200m, 400m, long jump, and javelin throw. She even attempted heptathlon in 2017-18, but dropped it because she wasn’t good at high jumps. It was in 2018 when she started playing shot put and joined the national camp in 2019.
