  • In her childhood days, Nethra Kumanan used to be majorly engaged in tennis, basketball, and cycling as a youngster.
  • Nethra Kumanan started her sailing journey at a summer class in 2010 at Tamil Nadu Sailing Association’s ‘Summer Sailing Camp’ and that’s when she decided to pursue it as her profession.
  • Nethra chose to complete her 11th and 12th standard from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) as she thought it would be better for her to manage her sailing career if she chose open schooling.
  • Before becoming a professional sailor, Nethra Kumanan learnt Bharatnatyam for six years from the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee Alarmel Valli.
  • Nethra Kumanan is one of the 13 Indian sailors who have represented the country of India at the Olympics.

  • In the same year, she became the first Indian woman to win a bronze medal at the Hempel Sailing World Cup Series which was held in Miami, U.S.A.
  • Nethra represented India at the Asian Games in 2014 which was held in South Korea where she finished seventh in the competition.
