ControversiesSundance Talk Backlash: At a 2017 Sundance Film Festival luncheon, Salma Hayek, actor Shirley MacLaine, and former Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams discussed women's empowerment in the film industry. During the conversation about race and privilege, Hayek asked Jessica a question many found offensive: "Who are you when you're not black and you're not a woman?" This comment led to backlash as many thought it was rude. Hayek, however, later apologised on Instagram, saying her words were misunderstood and that she supports the empowerment of Black women and women of color. She said the discussion was meant to be respectful and was disappointed it was portrayed as a fight. [1]IndieWire

Promoting 'American Dirt': In January 2020, Salma Hayek got into trouble for promoting a book called American Dirt without reading it first. The book, picked by television host Oprah Winfrey for her book club, tells the story of a Mexican woman running from a drug cartel. While some people praised it, many Latino and Mexican-American readers were upset because the book was written by a non-Mexican author and, according to them, showed a false and stereotypical picture of Mexican life and immigration. Salma said she got excited after hearing about the book and wanted to support Oprah, so she shared a post about it on Instagram. After realising the issue, she apologised and admitted she had not read the book and soon deleted the post. [2]NBC News

Salma and Nicole’s Awkward Moment: On 30 September 2024, Salma Hayek and actor Nicole Kidman had a brief awkward moment at Paris Fashion Week that was caught on camera. Salma gently placed her hand on Nicole to turn her toward photographers for pictures. However, Nicole quickly pulled her hand away and turned to greet Katy Perry instead. The two then exchanged a few serious words, which many thought showed tension. However, sources later said it was just a brief, awkward moment caused by the busy photo shoot, and there was no real conflict between them. [3]The Economic Times
