Some Lesser Known Facts About Sean Williams

  • Sean was inspired to pursue cricket professionally after watching the ICC ODI World Cup in 2003.
  • Sean made his List-A cricket debut on 3 December 2003 for Matabeleland against Midlands in the Faithwear Clothing Inter-Provincial One-Day Competition. He scored 32 runs and took a wicket in the match.
  • On 26 October 2004, Sean made his first-class cricket debut for Matabeleland against Mashonaland at Bulawayo.
  • Sean is an avid dog lover.

  • Sean was part of Zimbabwe’s cricket team, which participated in the Under-19 World Cup in 2004. He scored 157 runs and took five wickets in the tournament.
  • Sean comes from a sporting family background as all of his family members were active in cricket, hockey or both at some point of time. Sean’s mother was a part of the Zimbabwe national team that won the gold medal in women’s hockey at the 1980 Summer Olympics. His step-brother has also served as the captain of the Zimbabwe men’s national field hockey team.
  • Sean turned down a central contract from Zimbabwe’s cricket board in search of better cricket opportunities in overseas nations. Later, he changed his mind and returned to play for Zimbabwe. He again left Zimbabwe’s cricket in 2008 for a contract in South Africa, only to return weeks later.
  • In 2006, Sean was appointed as the captain of Zimbabwe’s cricket team for the Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka, the highlight being a win over England.
  • Sean’s highest domestic score came for Westerns in 2006-07 against Centrals. He scored 76 and 129 runs in both innings of the match.
  • In the 2015 ICC ODI World Cup, Sean guided his team to victory against the United Arab Emirates when he came to bat at a score of 177/5 and scored 76 runs off 65 balls.
  • Sean’s maiden test century came in 2016 against New Zealand at Bulawayo in the second innings of the match. He came to bat at number eight position and scored 119 off 148 balls. It was also the fastest ever century by any Zimbabwean in Test Cricket.
  • Sean scored the fastest ODI century by a Zimbabwean cricketer in April 2019 in the ODI series against the United Arab Emirates, scoring a century in the match in just 75 balls.

  • Sean’s first test series as Zimbabwe’s cricket team captain came in a two-match home series against Sri Lanka in January 2020. He scored his second test century during the series, scoring 107 runs.

  • During the World Cup Qualifier tournament in 2023, Sean scored 174 runs off 101 balls against the USA, which helped Zimbabwe register its highest score in ODI cricket of 408 runs. Zimbabwe also won the match by 304 runs, their second biggest victory in mens ODI cricket.
  • Sean scored his career-best score in test cricket in December 2024 against Afghanistan. He scored 154 runs from 174 balls in the match.
