ControversyArrested while protesting Dakota Access Pipeline
In 2016, Shailene Woodley was arrested in Sioux County, North Dakota, while protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline which was a controversial pipeline over 1,000 miles long that would transport crude oil through sacred lands of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Shailene Woodley was one of many of activists in the region protesting the construction of the pipeline. She streamed events from the protests on Facebook, and unexpectedly broadcast her arrest to thousands of people watching online. During her Facebook live, it was seen that a police officer informed her that she was being placed under arrest for criminal trespassing. After her arrest, Shailene's mugshot circulated massively on social media platforms along with the hashtags #FreeShailene. Not only from the general public but Shailene gained support from her fellow celebrities from the industry as well.
