- Sonia Malhar’s early career was as an insurance agent. One of her acquaintances during this time, a film camera operator, was instrumental in her entry into the film industry as a junior artist in 2012.
- Since the mid-2000s, she has worked actively as a social activist focusing on education, health care and poverty-stricken areas.
- She is the patron of the Kerala Blind Association (KBA), an NGO formed in 2007 for the welfare of the blind headquartered in Kozhikode, Kerala.
- She is also the director of the NGO, National Charity Development Board (NCDB) which is run by the Kerala Blind Association (KBA).
- She received a doctorate in Social Work in 2018 honouring her years of social activism.
- Some of the other films she acted in were Kidney Biriyani (2015), Utharam Parayathe (2017), Sthree Sthree (2019), and Rhithum – Beyond the Truth (2024).
