Calling out on Brahmins

In July 2019, several cases were filed against Zubeen Garg across Assam as he openly said 'these brahmins should be killed' at an event held at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) auditorium. [4]EastMojo

Insulting Bharat Ratna

In January 2019, the Assam Police had registered a case against Zubeen Garg for abusing the Bharat Ratna that was announced for Bhupen Hazarika by the Central Government on the occasion of Republic Day. Slapping a minor

In 2017, Zubeen Garg was slapped with a fine of Rs 5,000 and even sentenced to rigorous imprisonment in an assault case. The court held him guilty for slapping a minor boy. An FIR was lodged against Garg at Geetanagar Police Station in Guwahati, alleging that the singer slapped his minor son for showing disrespect.

Disrespecting the National Flag

In 2015, an FIR was filed against Zubeen Garg for allegedly showing disrespect to the National Flag on Independence Day. Police had registered the FIR under case number 502/15 containing defamatory matter.

Disrespecting Women/LGBTQ Community

Recently, Assam State Commission for Women (ASCW) reportedly took suo moto cognisance against Zubeen Garg for making sexually-explicit remarks against Nishita Goswami during the Prag Cine Awards in Guwahati. At the same event he made expicit remarks against LGBTQ community for which several activists demanded an apology from the singer.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Zubeen Garg

  • Zubeen Garg belonged to an Assamese Brahmin family and later adopted “Garg” as surname based on his gotra.
  • He was named after the music composer and orchestra conductor Zubin Mehta.
  • He spent his early childhood in Jorhat, Assam, as his father was frequently transferred due to his ACS job. He joined B. Borooah College to pursue a B.Sc. degree but dropped out to focus on music.
  • He started singing at age three and learned music from his mother and tabla from Pandit Robin Banerjee for 11 years.
  • Guru Ramani Rai taught him Assamese folk music, and he began composing songs during school days.
  • In 1992, he won a gold medal for western solo singing at a youth festival, motivating him to start a professional career.
  • He released his debut Assamese album Anamika in November 1992 and later albums like Xopunor Xur (1992) and Junaki Mon (1993).
  • In 1995, he released his first Bihu album Ujan Piriti which was commercially successful before moving to Mumbai.
  • In the mid-1990s, he shifted to Mumbai and recorded his first Hindi pop album Chandni Raat.
