Some Lesser Known Facts About Harivansh Narayan Singh
He was a very studious and sincere student in his school; loved by all his teachers because of his academic performance.
During his college time, he was very inspired and influenced by the socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan (JP). He even actively participated in the JP Movement of 1974 and dropped his surname ‘Narayan.’
In 1977, he joined the Times Of India (TOI) as a trainee journalist. Later, he shifted to Mumbai and started working with the famous magazine, ‘Dharmyug magazine’ till 1981.
He joined the Bank Of India and worked there from 1981 to 1984.
He worked as an assistant editor with Amrit Bazar Patrika’s magazine ‘Ravivar’ till 1989.
In an interview, Harivansh revealed that he started with ₹500/month as his first salary.
In 1990, when ‘Chandra Shekhar’ became the Prime Minister of India, Harivansh was assigned as his additional media advisor.
He was the former editor of the esteemed newspaper of Bihar and Jharkhand, “Prabhat Khabar” for over 25 years. He has also launched new editions of the Hindi daily in Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
In 2014, he was nominated for the Rajya Sabha by Nitish Kumar‘s JDU. It is said that before being picked for the Rajya Sabha, he was not even a primary member of the JDU party.
“I got the Rajya Sabha nomination form for Rs 10,000. The amount was refunded after I was elected unopposed. I didn’t spend a penny to reach Rajya Sabha…as a journalist, the whole experience has had a certain impact on me,” Harivansh wrote in one of his columns.
After being elected to the Rajya Sabha, he adopted Bahuaara village in Rohtas.
He is the first MP from Janata Dal Party, who has been elected to the post of Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. On 9 August 2018, he became the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha; defeating B. K. Hariprasad of the Congress Party (an MP from Karnataka). Harivansh got a total of 125 votes whereas Hariprasad secured 105.
