  • Nilam Hindocha is an Indian origin Swedish woman who is known for being the mother of Anni Dewani. Anni Dewani was murdered by two gunmen when she was in South Africa with her husband Shrien Dewani on their honeymoon on 13 November 2010.
  • In 2006, Nilam Hindocha was suffering from uterus cancer and Anni Dewani took a year off and was finding a job after completing her studies at the University while taking care of her ill mother. Later, she recovered from the disease but was recovering from its side effects. During the court trials of Anni murder case, she was advised by the doctors not to take the stress. Nilam Hindocha explained that Shrien’s lawyer was worried about the health of Shrien in the court and did not concerned about the health of Anni’s family members. She said,

The doctors say she should not have any stress. But every day is a stress for her with this case. Shrien’s lawyer is always saying, “his health, his health, his health”. Has she thought of our health?”

  • In 2013, Nilam Hindocha gave a sympathetic statement on her son-in-law Shrien Dewani when Nilam and her family were left shocked after hearing in the news that Capetown authorities suspected Shrien Dewani of the murder of Anni Dewani. At that time, Shrien Dewani complained about post-traumatic stress and depression and was admitted to a mental hospital. She said,

I feel sorry for Shrien, He is my son-in-law and he is as ruined by this as we are. He is ill, and I have sympathy with him. His life is broken for ever. But he will get the chance to get better. What about my Anni? What about her life?”

She further continues that she believed that Shrien loved Anni, and they did not understand the reason behind the killing of their beautiful daughter. She mentioned,

I believed Shrien was truly in love with my daughter, I just need him to tell me what happened. If he cannot, I will never, ever get over this. ‘I’ve lost my beautiful daughter. Unless he tells me the whole story –  this stress is killing me.”

  • According to Nilam Hindocha, the area where Anni and Shrien were kidnapped was a very secluded place where nobody goes at night. She told in an interview with a media person that she could not understand why Anni Dewani and Shrien went to that place in South Africa which was not safe at night. She narrated,

Shrien knew that area was not good. No one really goes there at night. They were staying in Cape Grace Hotel and she would have loved the nightlife around there. She would never have recommended they go to Gugulethu in the middle of the night.”

  • Nilam Hindocha revealed in a conversation with a media house that Anni Dewani did not like Shrien initially when they met with each other through mutual friends. Nilam added that Anni was seduced by gifts, flowers, and watch. She stated,

He chased her – he was always calling her and he showered her with presents. Shrien Dewani proposed after whisking Anni off to Paris by private jet.”

Nilam said in the same interview that she had negative instincts and uneasy feelings when Anni was on her honeymoon. She said,

I had a feeling on the day she died – it was a mother’s instinct. I just kept telling myself, “Ring Anni.” It was an uneasy feeling. I called her and she said she had so much to say but that it could wait. That was the last time we spoke.”

Nilam added that Shrien Dewani told Vinod Hindocha over the phone when Anni was kidnapped that he could not take care of our daughter, and he was sorry for the same. She said,

When Shrien called us in the early hours of the morning, after we’d learned Anni had been attacked, he was crying and kept saying, “I couldn’t take care of her, I’m sorry.”
