Some Lesser Known Facts About Abhilasha Barak

• Captain Abhilasha Barak is an officer in the Indian Army. She is known for becoming the first combat helicopter pilot in the history of the Indian Army.

• Abhilasha Barak in 2014, was working as a trainee with India’s premier defence institute, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Abhilasha also worked as an intern with the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India.

• In 2015, Abhilasha Barak worked as an intern with The Smart Cube.

• In 2016, after completing her B Tech, Abhilasha Barak worked as a Business Tech Analyst at Deloitte US.

• In 2017, Abhilasha Barak joined the Officers’ Training Academy; from where she completed her training on 07 September 2018.

• In 2018, after her passing out parade, Abhilasha Barak was commissioned in the Indian Army’s Corps of Army Air Defence (AAD).

• As a young officer, Abhilasha performed exceptionally well in her military courses. In 2018, she secured an ‘A’ grade in her Army Air Defence Young Officers’ (YOs) Course.

• In the same year, Abhilasha Barak managed to secure 75.70% in the Air Traffic Management and Air Laws Course.

• Before being shortlisted to join the training for Army Aviation Corps, Abhilasha Barak successfully cleared the Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT) and Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS).

• After her selection, Abhilasha Barak reported to Combat Army Aviation Training School (CATS) at Nashik. In an interview, Abhilasha Barak said,
  

  After completing my training from Officers Training Academy, Chennai, in 2018, I opted for the Army Aviation Corps. As I was filling the form, I knew I was eligible for only ground duty role but I ended up mentioning that I had earlier qualified my Pilot Aptitude Battery Test and computerised pilot selection system in one go. Somewhere in my heart, I always knew that the day was not far away when Indian Army would start inducting women as combat pilots.”

• Abhilasha Barak, earlier, had no intentions of joining the Indian Army. It all changed after her father’s retirement in 2011. In 2013, she was present at her elder brother’s passing out parade at the Indian Military Academy; which further strengthened her resolve of joining the Indian Army. During an interview, Abhilasha stated,
  

  I never realised it (that it was so much different) until our family moved out of the military life, after my father’s retirement in 2011. The feeling only grew stronger after seeing my elder brother’s passing out parade at Indian Military Academy in 2013. That was the moment when I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”

• Abhilasha Barak underwent six months of rigorous training before becoming a pilot.

• Abhilasha Barak had always dreamt of becoming a pilot. While giving an interview, Abhilasha exclaimed,
  

  Not many people know about this, but in 1987, during Operation Meghdoot, my father was leading a patrolling party from Amar Post to the Bana Top Post (earlier Quaid Post, when in Pakistan’s occupation). Owing to the bad weather, my father suffered from Cerebral Odema and was brought immediately back to Amar Post, from where he was quickly evacuated, right in time. He owes his life to the Army Aviation Corps and hence, so do I.”

• Abhilasha Barak was chosen as the Commander of the Corps of Army Air Defence’s Contingent, for the Presentation of Regimental Colours. The honour was presented to the Corps by the President, Ram Nath Kovind.

• Abhilasha Barak passed her promotional exam, Part B, in the first attempt.

• Out of 15 woman officers, Abhilasha Barak, along with one more woman officer, was selected for the training at Combat Army Aviation Training School (CATS) at Nashik.

• During her training at the Officers’ Training Academy in Chennai, Abhilasha Barak learned Judo, which is a form of martial arts.
