Some Lesser Known Facts About Syed Khwaja Azizuddin

• Aziz was part of the golden generation of Indian football. He is remembered as the all-rounder football payer of the ’50s, who played either as a full-back or centre-half player. He represented India in the 1952 and 1956 Summer Olympics.

• He was known for his counterattacks, aerial duels, and deft passing. Aziz was equally good with either foot. This gave him the advantage of passing the ball on either flank with accuracy, making his cross-field passes impeccable.

• He is applauded for playing with a cool head and great positional sense.

• The first inspiration for football in Aziz was planted by his physical education instructor at school. His name was Thakur Rao. Under him, Aziz learned the basics of football.

• His club career began with the National Sporting Club.

• Aziz played for the Santosh Trophy from 1949 to 1960, winning twice in 1956-57 and 1957-58. During these matches, he played as the captain of the team.

• In 1951, he competed in the Asian Games that were held in Delhi, adding a gold medal to his name.

• Aziz was a team player in the Summer Olympics of 1952, held in Helsinki, where Yugoslavia defeated India by a score of 10-1 in the preliminary round.

• He was in the team of the 1956 Summer Olympics, held in Melbourne, where the Indian football team reached the semi-final round for the first time in history.

• Aziz played for the Hyderabad City Police football club when it won the Durand Cup 4 times in 1950–51, 1954, 1957–58, and 1961.

• His team won the Rovers Cup 6 times in 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, and 1957; under the Hyderabad City Police.

• Aziz competed for India when it won the Colombo Cup 5 times in 1952, 1953, 1954, and 1955.

• At the time of his death, Aziz was residing at his daughter’s home in Chicago.
