Some Lesser Known Facts About Samoa Joe

Samoa’s parents used to operate the largest Polynesian dance troop named Tiare Productions in the United States. In an interview, Samoa said that at the age of 5, he himself participated in most of the troop’s performances. “I danced, played drums, sang….toured the world with my family three times – China, Japan, Europe, across the US, everywhere,” said Samoa. Tiare Productions even went on to perform at the 1984 Summer Olympic games.

As Samoa grew up, he started inclining more towards wrestling and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) than academics. As a result, he was crowned the California State Junior Judo Champion during his high school years.

Though it is hard to fathom a man like Samoa doing a white collar job, this was actually the case, as before joining the world of pro-wrestling, he worked as a mortgage broker.

He was the longest reigning Champion ever at the independent wrestling promotion- Ring of Honor (ROH). From March 2003 to December 2004, Samoa’s Championship reign spanned a period of 635 days.

Although it is a common known fact that former wrestler Mick Foley has a knack of spotting wrestling talents, not many people know that the likes of Cm Punk and Samoa Joe made it to the WWE because of him. Mick Foley first suggested Samoa Joe to the WWE in the year 2005, however, he could not convince the owner, Vince McMahon, at that time. Thus, Samoa joined rival promotion TNA as a full-time wrestler.

Samoa is fluent in all kinds of freestyle wrestling namely Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo and Muay-Thai.
