• Raj Kumar grew up in a financially struggling family in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. Their financial issues were so severe that there were times when it was hard to afford food.

• Raj won the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections on a ticket from the INC by defeating the Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Sohan Singh Thandal by a margin of 29,261 votes; he represented the Chabbewal (SC) constituency.

• He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Hoshiarpur but lost the seat to Som Parkash, a BJP candidate.
