- Rahul Ananda belongs to a Hindu family in Kulaura Upazila, Moulvibazar district, Bangladesh.
- During his graduation, Rahul began performing in various theatrical plays. After completing his graduation, he moved to Dhaka, Bangladesh, and began studying at an art school.
- In Dhaka, he joined a theatrical group known as Aranyak.
- Later, he left the theatre group Aranyak and started his own theatre group known as the Prachyanat.
- While performing with the theatre group, he became friends with various musicians and started learning music.
- While studying at Dhaka University, Rahul began experimenting with various objects that could be used as musical instruments and started composing music. He performed at various functions and events at the institute with his friends, using his instruments.
- In 2006, Rahul Ananda along with his fellow artists of the theatre group Prachyanat started a music band, Joler Gaan.
- The band began performing at various colleges and schools. He gained recognition for performing using self-made instruments. Rahul Ananda can play various instruments including Guitar, tabla, and Harmonium.
- On 10 September 2023, French President Emmanuel Macron visited Rahul Ananda’s house in Dhaka to see Rahul’s instrument collection which comprises of more than 3000 self-made musical instruments.
- In August 2024, after Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled Bangladesh, there were attacks by the student movement. During the attacks, Rahul Ananda’s house was burnt and looted.
- On 5 August 2024, the mob attacked his house. His entire collection of self-made musical instruments was broken and burnt. They also stole the valuable items and burnt the house down. At the time of the attack, Rahul was at his house with his family; however, he managed to escape.
- Rahul Ananda had lived in this house for more than a decade and it was a rental. After the incident, one of Rahul’s fellow musician friends revealed that the house was also a studio for the Joler Gaan band and they often recorded their songs there. He claimed that the incident was a hate crime as Rahul was also a cultural activist belonging to a minority religion.
