Some Lesser Known Facts About Ashok Sharma
- Ashok Sharma grew up in a middle-class family in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
- He developed an interest in cricket at a young age after watching his elder brother play cricket. He began playing the game with his friends near his house.
- While in school, he played for his school’s cricket team.
- Although his father wanted him to become a cricketer, his mother wanted him to clear government examinations and work in the government sector.
- In 2017, his father enrolled him at the Jaipur Cricket Academy to polish his skills.
- Later, he joined the Aravali Cricket Club in Jaipur, where Vivek Yadav was his coach.
- He was also associated with the Mohan Bagan Club during his school days and played several matches for them.
- In 2019, Ashok Sharma was named to the Rajasthan Under-19 team for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy. However, he could not play any matches due to the Covid-19 lockdown. The U-19 matches were called off due to Covid.
- A year later, he took part in the 50th Canara Cricket Tournament 2020.
- By the time, ICC brought back U19 Cricket in action, Ashok was no longer eligible to represent India at the U19 level.
- In 2021, he fell ill with dengue, and while he was still recovering from his illness, his coach Vivek Yadav passed away. Later, he was drafted in the Under-23 but he struggled in the Challenger Trophy and failed to make a place for himself in the CK Nayudu Trophy squad.
- In the same year, Ashok appeared for Red Bull trials, where he was picked up as a net bowler for Rajasthan Royals.
- Impressed by his bowling action, Rajasthan Royals’ fielding coach Dishant Yagnik invited him to attend the IPL 2022 trials. In an interview, while talking about Dishant, Ashok said,
Dishant bhaiya has supported me a lot. He was the one who sent my bowling videos to different IPL franchises. I was then called for trials by KKR and RR.”
- As Ashok had not played any First Class or List-A matches, he was not eligible for IPL auction. However, his smooth run-up and consistent action in the trials impressed the selectors, prompting the Kolkata Knight Riders management to approach the BCCI and request them to include his name in the auction list.
- He was then bought by KKR for Rs. 55 lakhs in the 2022 IPL auction.
