- Her parents divorced during her childhood, which, according to her, led to issues with her self-esteem and education during school.
- She was recommended to pursue cosmetology by her high school guidance counsellor.
- In an interview, she revealed that her poor grades at Washtenaw Community College made her feel depressed. She claimed that on her father’s advice, she took up mathematics and, after receiving good grades, fell in love with the subject, and said,
However, my father convinced me to take a pre-algebra class. I got an A and fell in love with mathematics. That was when I realized that I was holding on to a whole range of limiting beliefs that I had to set aside.
- According to her, her interest in science fiction influenced her choice of pursuing aerospace engineering.
- She served as a secretary at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and a member of the National Society of Black Engineers while studying at the University of Michigan.
