Controversies | Offensive Statements Targeting Jewish Students: While studying at the University of Birmingham, Zarah Sultana faced criticism for a series of comments and social media posts directed at Jewish students. According to reports in Jewish News and The Jewish Chronicle, former classmates accused her of telling a Jewish student that they were only able to speak about peace in the Middle East because of their "privilege." Others claimed that she and her group often picked on Jewish students and did not take their views on racism and injustice seriously. In now-deleted posts, she called Zionism a racist idea and said Israel was created by forcing people off their land. She also compared supporting Israel to supporting South Africa's former apartheid system. These claims resurfaced during her 2019 election campaign and caused concern in parts of the Jewish community. Sultana, however, later apologised, saying she wrote them out of "frustration" and no longer believed in those views. [1]Campaign Against Antisemitism Backlash Over NATO Statement: In February 2022, after the war in Ukraine began, Sultana signed a statement from the 'Stop the War Coalition' that criticised NATO. This drew criticism from within her party. She later withdrew her name but made it clear that she opposed Russia's actions and believed some media reports were misleading and harmful to the safety of public figures and open debate. [2]The Mirror Suspended for Opposing a Welfare Policy: In July 2024, Zarah Sultana was suspended from the Labour Party for voting against the two-child benefit cap, a policy supported by her party. She continued working as an independent MP after losing the party whip. While some of the other suspended MPs were allowed back, Sultana stayed out of the party, saying she disagreed with its direction and wanted to stand up for what she believed was right.
