Some Lesser Known Facts About Sudan Gurung

• Sudan Gurung was born in a middle-class family in Nepal.

• Before 2015, he was employed in event management, and his lifestyle was linked with parties and clubs. He worked as a DJ and also owns a club.

• In 2015, when a major earthquake struck Nepal, he decided to become a social worker to help those in need. A call for volunteers was made through his social media accounts, and about 200 people gathered.

• According to some reports, his own child died during the natural disaster.

• Relief work in hospitals and affected areas was carried out by the volunteers even though professional training was not available.

• A group named Hami Nepal was formed in 2015 and was later officially registered in 2020 as an NGO. By that time, more than 1,600 members were enrolled in the organisation.

• Rescue operations, blood donation campaigns and awareness programs were conducted. During the COVID-19 pandemic, medical assistance was provided by Hami Nepal.

• Oxygen cylinders and hospital beds were donated to Bir Hospital and the National Trauma Centre. In total, 520 oxygen cylinders were distributed to hospitals across the country.

• Relief during the Manang and Sindhupalchowk floods was organised, and pregnant women and children were supplied with food, tents, blankets and clothes.

• In 2023, earthquake relief worth Rs 15 million was sent to Turkey. Protest campaigns were also conducted by Hami Nepal.

• A seven-month Ghopa Camp protest in Dharan was carried out to highlight transparency issues at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, and awareness in the local population was increased.

• In 2022, Hami Nepal was given the 360 Impact Award. In the same year, the Barbara Foundation Covid-19 Barista Samman Award was also received.

• In September 2025, when the government of Nepal banned 26 social media platforms, youth protests were organised across Kathmandu and other cities.

• Sudan Gurung was identified as the leader of the movement. At least 20 deaths and over 300 injuries were reported during the clashes.

• A resignation was given by Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli also resigned. Sudan Gurung became popular as the president of Hami Nepal and was known as a leading figure in Nepal’s Gen Z movement and civic activism.
