Nagma Mallick was born to parents from Kasaragod, Kerala.

Her uncle, Lieutenant P. Mohammed Hasheem, became a martyr at the age of 23 during the 1965 India-Pakistan war. After that, a street in Thalangara, Kasaragod, is named after him to honour his sacrifice.

Her grandfather, Puthiyapura Ahmed, was one of the first Muslim lawyers in Kasaragod. He practised law from the 1930s to 1970.
- In 1991, Nagma Mallick joined the Indian Foreign Service and began working as a career diplomat. She became the first Muslim woman in the Indian Foreign Service.

Her first posting was in Paris, where she worked at the Indian Embassy to the French Republic and the Indian Mission to UNESCO.

After returning to New Delhi, Nagma Mallick held several positions in the Government of India, such as Desk Officer in the West Europe Division of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Later, she joined the personal staff of then Prime Minister I.K. Gujral in the Prime Minister’s Office. She then became the first woman to hold the position of Deputy Chief of Protocol (Ceremonial) for India.
- After that, Nagma Mallick was appointed as First Secretary at the Indian Embassy in Nepal. She then began working as a Counsellor at the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka.

When she returned to Delhi, she began working as the Deputy Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs.

Nagma Mallick was then appointed as Director in the Eurasia Division, where she managed Indian relations with Russia and the CIS countries.

In July 2010, she began working as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand. She worked in the position till September 2012.

Later, Nagma Mallick was appointed as Head of the Commercial Wing at the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, where she participated in various talks that modified the India-Nepal Trade Treaty.

After her tenure ended in Nepal, she was posted to Colombo, where she headed the Press and Culture Wing at the Indian High Commission.

During this time, Nagma Mallick was given the additional charge as Director of the Indian Cultural Centre in Sri Lanka.
- In 2012, she was appointed Ambassador to Tunisia. She worked in the position till November 2015.
- In December 2015, Nagma Mallick started working as the High Commissioner of India to Brunei Darussalam. She served in the position till December 2018.
- From February 2019 to January 2020, she served as the Head of the Policy Planning Division of the Ministry.

In February 2020, Nagma Mallick was appointed as Additional Secretary (Africa) in the Ministry of External Affairs. She served in the position till August 2021.

During this period, she managed India’s relations with Eastern and Southern African countries. She also supervised India’s relations with all African nations.

In September 2021, Nagma Mallick was appointed as India’s ambassador to Poland and Lithuania.

As of 2025, she held the senior rank of Secretary/Grade I in the Government of India.
