Some Lesser Known Facts About Anurag Kumar

• Anurag Kumar hails from Uttar Pradesh.

• He cleared the UPSC Civil Service Examination and joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) as a direct recruitment on 4 September 1994 in the Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre.

• During the early years of his career, Anurag served in various policing assignments in the AGMUT cadre.

• From 1994 to 2010, Kumar was appointed in the Delhi Police, where he served several field assignments as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) across multiple districts, and oversaw law and order, crime control and intelligence operations.

• In 2010, Kumar was awarded with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service, and in 2016 President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in IB.

• In 2014, he was empanelled by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet to hold administrative ranks up to Inspector General (IG) and equivalent levels.

• In 2018, Anurag worked as part of a Central Deputation tenure after being relieved from Union Territory assignments

• In July 2020, while on central deputation, he was promoted to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADG) by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

• In 2021, Anurag served on deputation in the Ministry of External Affairs before returning to his parent cadre. After that he joined the Intelligence Bureau (IB) in a senior role.

• Kumar spent several years in the IB, where he worked on intelligence gathering, internal security, and counter-terrorism matters.

• In September 2025, Anuraj was appointed as the Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau.

• Anurag Kumar has over 30 years of experience in policing, intelligence, and national security and regarded as an officer with extensive expertise in intelligence-led policing strategic security, and counter-terrorism operations.

• On 16 July 2026, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his repatriation from the Intelligence Bureau to his parent Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre.

• On 17 July 2026, the Ministry of Home Affairs appointed him as the Commissioner of Delhi Police. Anurag Kumar will replace Satish Golcha, who had been serving as New Delhi’s police chief since August 2025.
