- Inderjit Singh Bindra was born in a Punjabi family and later joined the Indian Administrative Service.
- He joined his parent Punjab cadre in 1966 and had a brief earlier stint in the Indian Police Service.
- During the early 1970s, he served as Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana from 1972 to 1974 in Punjab. In 1975, he served as Deputy Commissioner of Patiala, continuing his career in senior district administration roles.
- He began his long association with cricket administration in 1975, starting a career that lasted for more than four decades.
- In 1978, he formally assumed office as President of the Punjab Cricket Association and began restructuring cricket administration in the state.
- Punjab hosted its first Test match in 1983 at Jalandhar between India and Pakistan during his tenure in cricket administration.
- During the 1980s, he served as Special Secretary to the President of India, Giani Zail Singh, and later retired from that position.
