  • Karthik Raja was born into a family of music composers, as his father, Ilaiyaraaja, was a renowned composer.
  • He attended St. Bede’s School and Boston Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai.
  • From childhood, he often visited recording studios with his father.
  • He learned Western classical music at Trinity School of Music, focusing on piano. He also studied Carnatic music with T. V. Gopalakrishnan and V. Dakshinamoorthy.
  • At age 13, he played keyboard for the song ‘Kannukkum’ in the Tamil film Ninaikka Therinda Maname (1987). In 1992, he composed ‘Pandianin Rajiyathil’ for Pandiyan.
  • In 1993, he composed ‘Ninaikindra’ for Athma. In the early 1990s, he composed some background music for the television series Bible.
  • Reportedly, Rajinikanth approached him to compose music for his 1993 film Valli, but Raja rejected the offer as the script was very intense.
