- In 2024, Chirag Tyagi left his IIT studies and started coaching under coach Gajendra Singh.
- He was called ‘Toofan’ by his villagers.
- In May 2026, Chirag Tyagi represented Uttar Pradesh in the Men’s T12 (Visually Impaired Athletes) category in the 8th Indian Open Para Athletics International Championships, which were held at Sri Kanteerava Stadium Bengaluru, Karnataka.
- There, he won a gold medal in the 400 meter race and a silver medal in 1500 meter race.
- Chirag Tyagi then qualified for the Para Asian Games, which were scheduled to be held in Japan in October 2026.
- On 30 May 2026, Chirag Tyagi made headlines when he was shot dead in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India.
- In a media talk, his uncle Rajesh Tyagi, stated that on the morning of 30 May 2026, Chirag informed him that he would reach home in the evening.
- Rajesh said that Chirag was staying at the old hostel of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi after returning from Bengaluru. Rajesh said,
On Saturday, around 7am, I spoke to him. He said he would be home, in Muradnagar, by 10.30-11am with Yash, and asked me to tell his mother to cook dal and chawal for lunch.”
- When Chirag did not reach home, his family started calling him repeatedly.
- The police then found his body in Sai Kunj, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, and informed his family.
- His uncle , Rajesh, told the media that the police called them and said that Chirag had met with an accident. He said,
Around 4pm, a police officer called and said Chirag had met with an accident. When we reached the govt hospital, we found out he had been murdered.”
- The police then confirmed that he was shot dead.
- During investigations, the police searched CCTV footages and and arrested his fellow competitor, a para-athlete, and friend, Yash Khatik.
- The police stated that Yash called Chirag and told him that he wanted to return his 50,000 rupees.
- Chirag Tyagi had the plan to receive a female friend at the Ghaziabad railway station. However, he agreed to Yash and met him first. The police said,
The two walked together for some time after Yash told Chirag someone was coming with the money. He then shot Chirag multiple times from behind and fled.”
- Yash bought the pistol and two bullets for Rs. 50,000 from Muradnagar, Uttar Pradesh.
- The local people found Chirag’s body in a park and informed the police.
- The police then found a phone from the body and contacted the family members.
- The police revealed that Chirag and Yash had earlier received the para athletics training together. They competed together in many championships under ‘blind’ category and were fast friends. The police said,
For nearly a decade, they shared everything – lived in the same room, and pushed each other during grueling training sessions over the last five years.
The police added that Chirag had complete faith in Yash. It said,
Chirag trusted Yash implicitly, even sharing his personal account details with him.”
- During investigations, it was found that Chirag Tyagi had once complained against Yash in the verification of his documents.
- In December 2025, Yash Khatik was banned by the World Para Athlete (WPA). The organisation claimed that the documents he submitted to prove his disability were not sufficient.
- His coach told in a media conversation that Chirag helped Yash in preparing those documents, after which, Yash got disqualified from the Youth Asian Games.
- Yash then doubted Chirag for filing incorrect details about him.
- The police stated that Yash wanted the revenge from Chirag, so he shot Chirag dead. Yash used his pistol for the crime. The police said,
The motive was professional revenge. Yash Khatik lured Tyagi to an isolated spot and shot him in the back to settle score.”
