Some Lesser Known Facts About Dot aka Aditi Saigal

Aditi Saigal’s father, Amit Saigal, was fondly called “Papa Rock” in the music community. He died in Goa after drowning in the sea on 5 January 2012. ^[3]The Hindustan Times

Born to a singer father, she developed a passion for music at a very young age. In an interview, while talking about the same, she said,

I remember waking up to music a lot. Sometimes it would be Frou Frou (Imogen Heap) or Diogal Sakho playing his Samba Alla. Dad would be playing his djembe along as I tumbled out of my bedroom. I also remember singing to this one cassette that used to be in my nani’s car called Dances from Around the World.”

After that, she was raised by her paternal grandparents, Ashok Kumar Saigal and Madhu Saigal.

In 2016, she worked as an assistant audition manager at the Barefoot Theatre Company in New Delhi for 2 months.

She started her musical journey in New Delhi with a band called Blank, which comprised musicians from Gurgaon’s One World College of Music.

In 2017, she became active on her YouTube channel, Dot, where she uploaded raw recordings of herself singing on the piano.

On 28 February 2017, she came into the limelight with the song ‘Everybody Dances to Techno,’ which went viral on the internet.

Later, she uploaded various singles on her channel like Unwanted Opinions (2017), Normal Things (2017), Bet You Believe (2017), and Sunny Days (2018).

She worked as a sales assistant at Accessorize in Bangor from December 2017 to February 2018.

She received The School of Music Prize for Outstanding Overall Achievement in her second year at Bangor University, Wales (2018).

From August 2018 to June 2019, she was an administrator at the International Education Centre (IEC) at Bangor University.

In 2019, she was a teaching intern at Dankook University, Cheonan, South Korea for 2 months.

From August 2019 to September 2019, she worked as an Administrative Assistant and Database Designer for Eastwind Academy for Advanced Music & Performance in Gurgaon, India.

She draws inspiration from singers like Regina Spektor, Paulo Nutini, Fiona Apple, KT Tunstall, Jack Johnson, Peggy Lee, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, and Aretha Franklin.

On 16 July 2021, she released her own album named Khamotion, which had a series of songs that she wrote for her final year project in college.

She adopted the stage name “Dot.” at the age of 10 while filling colours in a colouring book along with her mother. She explained the same in an interview and said,

So I liked to colour within the margins but my mom was fond of making dots outside the margin. She also made small designs. l used to be mad at my mom and said, ‘Mom, why do you do this? Keep it inside the line.’ She always answered, ‘A little dot never hurt anyone and it greatly improves the whole picture.’ That was my inspiration for this name.” ^[4]The Times of India

During an interview, she shared that she followed the concept of slow fashion. She said that she often bought second-hand clothes and maintained a capsule wardrobe to avoid unnecessary shopping. ^[5]Verve Magazine
