  • After finishing his postgraduation in Mumbai, India, Ashley Tellis moved to the United States to pursue a PhD in Political Science at the University of Chicago.

  • In 1994, he published his PhD research titled Drive to Domination: Towards a Pure Realist Theory of Politics.

  • After that, Ashley Tellis worked as a senior policy analyst at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, California, United States. He also worked as a policy analysis lecturer at the RAND Graduate School.

  • At RAND, he studied nuclear deterrence, South Asian security, and global power politics after the Cold War. His work combined data analysis with real-world political knowledge.

  • After that, Ashley Tellis joined the US State Department during the George W. Bush administration, where he worked as the senior director for strategic planning and Southwest Asia. He also worked as a special assistant to then US President George W. Bush.

  • He then served as a senior adviser to the US Ambassador at the Embassy in New Delhi. During this period, he helped negotiate the US-India civil nuclear agreement. The deal was successful and improved relations between the two countries.

  • Ashley Tellis once stated in a conference that the U.S. should reduce its strict guidelines to control nuclear weapons in South Asia.

  • He claimed that the U.S. should build a strong relationship with India, as it would bring better results for the U.S. rather than just demanding nonproliferation.

  • Some media reports claimed that he had more than a thousand pages of classified records stored at his home.

  • During investigations, federal agents found the top-secret papers in the basement of his house in Vienna, Virginia. These papers were labelled as ‘TOP SECRET’ and ‘SECRET’ by him.

  • Ashley Tellis had top-secret clearance, which gave him access to sensitive government information.

  • During court proceedings, Lindsey Halligan, the US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, released a statement about the case. Halligan said,

    The charges as alleged in this case represent a grave risk to the safety and security of our citizens. If convicted, Tellis can face prison time of up to 10 years, and a fine of up to $250,000.”
