- Asim Malik grew up in a Punjabi Awan family.
- His father had served in X Corps in Rawalpindi.
- In 2003, he published the thesis Mountain Warfare: The Need for Specialist Training while studying at Fort Leavenworth, United States.
- In 1989, he was assigned to the 12th Baloch Regiment.
- After that, the National Defence University appointed him as their chief instructor.
- The Infantry Brigade in Waziristan then appointed him as their head.
- He has taught at the Command and Staff College, Quetta.
- The 41st Infantry Division in Balochistan designated him as their Major General.
- Asim Malik served the Baloch Regiment till his superannuation.
- Asim Malik has served as the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO).

- In October 2021, he started working as a Lieutenant General.
