Some Lesser Known Facts About Asim Malik

Asim Malik grew up in a Punjabi Awan family.

His father had served in X Corps in Rawalpindi.

In 2003, he published the thesis Mountain Warfare: The Need for Specialist Training while studying at Fort Leavenworth, United States.

In 1989, he was assigned to the 12th Baloch Regiment.

After that, the National Defence University appointed him as their chief instructor.

The Infantry Brigade in Waziristan then appointed him as their head.

He has taught at the Command and Staff College, Quetta.

The 41st Infantry Division in Balochistan designated him as their Major General.

Asim Malik served the Baloch Regiment till his superannuation.

Asim Malik has served as the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO).

In October 2021, he started working as a Lieutenant General.

After that, the General Headquarters (GHQ), Rawalpindi, appointed him as their Adjutant General.

He then investigated the cause of the 9 May 2023 riots after the arrest of Imran Khan.

Reportedly, he court-martialed a former Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) named Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed, who was charged with corruption after his superannuation.

On 30 September 2024, Pakistan Television Corporation announced that he was appointed as the Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence (DG ISI).

In 2024, Asim Malik became the first ISI head to receive a doctorate.

Reportedly, he never worked in the intelligence force.

His appointment was made when the political conditions in the country were not stable due to an increase in terrorist activities growing questions on ISI.

Reportedly, Asim Malik is a good friend of COAS Asim Munir. They received cadet training and the Sword of Honour together in the Pakistan Army.

In May 2025, the Prime Minister’s Office appointed him as the National Security Adviser (NSA).

After that, the National Security Committee (NSC) of Pakistan designated him as their Head after the Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, terror attack.

He then became the first person in the history of Pakistan to hold both positions, DG ISI and NSA, at the same time.
