Some Lesser Known Facts About Aslam Thambi
- Aslam Saja Mohamed Thambi is a Sri Lankan Kabbadi player. He came into the limelight in 2022 when he participated as a raider in the 9th season of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) in India.
- He began playing Kabaddi professionally in 2013, but Kabaddi was not as popular in his country compared to India. There were not many big media houses or fans coming to support his team.
- According to Aslam Thambi, he chose Kabaddi because he loved winning and had a strong desire to be the best. He led the Lankan Lions to the bronze medal at the 2016 Asian Junior Kabaddi Championship in Iran and gained recognition on the international stage. Once, in a media discussion, he shared that he began playing Kabaddi during his school days. He said,
I started from school only. Started winning at the school level, and federation level and the hunger to win kept me close to this game. After I played at the Junior Asian Championships, I became sure that I want to take this sport up seriously.”
Aslam Thambi added in the same conversation that he used to watch the Pro Kabaddi League on television, and the league had a large fan following in Sri Lanka. He watched the Pro Kabaddi League since 2014, and Anup Kumar and Maninder Singh were his favourite PKL players.
- In 2021, he was the vice-captain of the Sri Lankan Kabaddi team, and they won the Bangabandhu Cup Kabaddi tournament in Dhaka, earning him the Bangabandhu Cup.
- The Bengal Warriors team in PKL bought him for Rs. 10 Lakhs in 2022. In 2023, Aslam Thambi played in the tenth season of the Pro Kabaddi League as a raider for the Bengal Warriors team. He was coached by Kasinatha Baskaran.
