After finishing his graduation, he worked as an engineer for 32 years at the Mumbai Municipal Corporation.

While living in Vile Parle, Mumbai, he met Sumant Varangaonkar. After that, they started ‘Kilbil Balrangmanch,’ a children’s theatre group and produced many plays for children.

Karve was known for playing ‘Gundyabhau’ in the television show Chimanrao Gundyabhau. He acted alongside Dilip Prabhavalkar, who played the character Chimanrao. The show was aired on Doordarshan and was based on the books by CV Joshi.

His acting skills impressed the audience so much that they continued to call him by his character’s name even after the show ended.
- After that, Bal Karve joined the theatre with the help of Vijaya Mehta and Vijaya Joglekar-Dhumale.

He acted in many well-known plays, including Rathchakra, Tandul Bhakta Bhakta, Manomani, Ai Retire Hote, and Kusum Manohar Lele.
- He acted in many Marathi films, such as Jait Re Jait (1977), Chatak Chandani (1982), and Lapandav (1993).

Karve became popular with the 1978 play Suryachi Pille, directed by Damu Kenkre. The play had notable actors like Madhav Vatve, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Mohan Gokhale, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, and Shanta Jog.
- Karve died in Mumbai on 28 August 2025, three days after his 95th birthday.
