Controversies | Recieved criticism for taking a photo with the President Diego received criticism especially by members of the LGBTQ community after he met the former President Jair Bolsonaro in October 2019, due to homophobic statements made by the president in the past. He even said in an interview that the intensity of the hate grew so much for him that he was forced to take the retirement from the sports. He further said, "I didn't imagine I would retire, because I was going to try for an Olympic spot, but I got so tired of this issue. Some Lesser Known Facts About Diego Hypólito
- Diego began gymnastics when he was seven years old. He was motivated by his sister Daniele who joined Flamengo at ten years old and was receiving a salary, housing assistance, and school support from the club.
- Diego won the floor exercise event in the children’s division at 1997’s Brazilian National Championships and was 2001’s all-around junior national champion.
- Diego likes to travel and explore places around the world.
- At 15, in his first year competing, Diego won three gold medals at the Brazilian Championship.
- Hypólito had competed at the 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007 World Championships by the time he reached the age of 21.
- Hypólito was one of three male Brazilians in artistic gymnastics at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
- In an interview, Diego revealed that it was in 2014 when he revealed to his family that he was gay. He was in China preparing for the World Championships when he texted her mom to tell her about it. He further said,
She didn’t reply to me for a while and when she did, she wasn’t very nice. Since I was the one who was closest to her of all her children, I think it must have been hard for her too. I was very ashamed to face my family. I distanced myself from them for almost a year, I even missed one Christmas because of how heavy things were. My father took it better and Daniele supported me fully. She said she always knew it even though I never said anything.”
- After their retirement from gymnastics, Diego and Daniele participated in various dance and dating reality shows, such as Dança dos Famosos, Dancing Brasil, Exathlon, and Power Couple Brasil.
