- Hokato Hotozhe Sema was born into a family of farmers.
- Since his teens, he was passionate about serving in the Indian Army.
- Later, he was posted as a havildar with the 9th Assam Regiment. On 14 October 2002, during a military operation Counter Infiltration Operation at LOC, he lost his leg in a landmine.
- Sema then started his training in the shot put throw. He has been training at the Army Paralympic Node in Pune for a few years.
- He has participated in various shot put championships like Grand Prix, World Para Championship, Asian Para Games, and Paralympics.
- In 2022, he became the first athlete from Nagaland to win a medal in the Asian Para Games.
- He once shared that he trains for around 14 hours a week.
