Controversies | Controversial drug testing Before the UFC 189 event in 2015, Jose Aldo suffered an injury in ribs which forced him to miss the event. In June 2015, a drug tester named Ben Mosier flew to Brazil from the US to take a urine sample for drug testing on behalf of Nevada State Athletic Commission. Officials of CABMMA (The Brazilian MMA commission) were not notified about such testing but they got involved and said that he did not have the proper work visa which was required to do the drug test. Mosier was fined by CABMMA, the drug sample he had collected was destroyed, and he was told to leave the country within 8 days. Although Aldo provided another sample which came out clean and did not have any high-performance drugs, many fans in Brazil criticized Nevada Commission for carrying out the test in such a manner. Receiving government handouts In January 2023, Brazilian media reported that Jose Aldo's wife, Vivianne Pereira, received $860 in emergency funds from the Brazilian government during the COVID-19 pandemic between May and October 2020. It was alleged that she was ineligible for the payout. In October 2022, then-President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, also signed an agreement for the transfer of R$200,000 from the Ministry of Citizenship to the JAJ Institute, an NGO chaired by José Aldo. It was later reported that around the same time, when his wife was receiving the emergency payouts, Aldo purchased a house worth $700,000 in Florida, USA. After Bolsonaro lost the election, he went to US and lived with Aldo in his Florida home. |
