Some Lesser Known Facts About Kami Rita Sherpa

• Kami Rita is a Nepali mountain climber who has made many records in mountaineering, particularly a world record 28 climbs to the summit of the World’s highest mountain, Mount Everest.

• While studying at the Thame Dechen Chokhorling monastery, he contemplated becoming a monk, but eventually left the Monastery school and entered the field of local tourism.

• He commenced his mountaineering journey as a porter, assisting climbers by transporting supplies and equipment up the slopes. Over time, he honed his mountaineering expertise and ascended to become a climbing guide.

• According to one source, he began ferrying goods to the Everest Base Camp at the age of twelve. As per his brother Lhakpa Rita, his initial job was in 1992, assisting a cook at the Everest Base Camp.

• On 13 May 1994, he summited Mount Everest for the first time via S Col – SE Ridge. Subsequently, he also conquered it from N Col – NE Ridge. In 2017, he joined the ranks of Apa Sherpa and Phurba Tashi Sherpa as the third person to reach the Everest summit 21 times. On 16 May 2018, he achieved a historic milestone as the first individual to reach the Everest summit 22 times. On 14 May 2023, another guide, Pasang Dawa, matched Kami Rita’s record of 26 Everest summits.

• On 17 May 2023, Kami Rita achieved his 27th Everest summit, setting a remarkable record. Then, on 23 May 2023, he surpassed his own achievement by conquering Everest for an unprecedented 28th time, becoming the climber with the maximum number of Everest summits.

• He holds the record for the most climbs over 8000 meters, scaling Cho-Oyu eight times in 2001, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2016, Lhotse once in 2011, and K2 once in 2014.

• Kami Rita’s climbing achievements extend beyond Everest, as he has also conquered peaks like Baruntse, Ama Dablam, Manaslu, Annapurna IV, and Mount Elbrus.

• After his tenure at Alpine Ascents International, he joined Seven Summit Treks in May 2018. In the same year, he was appointed as the brand ambassador for a Nepalese cement company, endorsing their product Brij Super Premium OPC. In August 2019, he took on the roles of Brand Ambassador and Chief Adventure Consultant for Himalayan Glacier Adventure and Travel Company.

• In interviews, he has frequently criticized the Nepalese government for not providing enough support to Sherpas. In one interview, he said,
  

  Our government hasn’t done much for us. We are famous around the world. Many foreigners know us, but our government doesn’t care about us.” ^[1]Gulf Times

• In an interview, he revealed that he wears a small Buddhist locket around his neck containing prayers and chants by Lama (Rinpoche).

• His name, Kami Rita, holds a unique tale. In accordance with his traditions, children are named on their day of birth. Due to the loss of his elder brother, he was named Kami, meaning Blacksmith, to appease the Gods. Rita, symbolizing the passing of his elder brother, was also incorporated into his name.

• In an interview, he expressed his determination to never retire from mountain climbing, vowing to continue scaling peaks until his body allows.
