Khalid was born in Kuwait to Indian parents. Jamil played for three clubs in India in his twelve-year playing career.

Despite being born in Kuwait, Khalid decided to play for India. He made seven appearances for Indian Football team.

Khalid signed to play for Mahindra United in 1997 but never played in that season. In the next season, he signed for Air India FC in 1998.

When he was playing for Air India FC, he received the offer from Brunei but he turned down, he still regrets that decision.

In 2002, he got back to Mahindra United but due to injuries, he could not play more matches.

Reportedly, Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan will portray his character in his upcoming biopic.
