  • His great grandfather was a foreman at the Oliver mine, and the family has strong roots in the area.
  • His father Lyle was an operating engineers local 49 and his mother Cindy was a nurse caregiver.
  • In Eveleth, there is the United States Hockey Hall of fame and Gulbranson started skating when he was two years old.
  • The family experienced a financial crisis when it was still growing up. They resorted to food assistance, Medicaid and community support occasionally.
  • Notification of electricity shutoff and rough winters became a part of life during those years. He has four year old sister, Alli.
