  • Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar is the Indian Army’s Western Army Commander. In July 2023, he came into the limelight after he was given the position of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) for the Indian Army’s Western Command.
  • After undergoing three years of training at National Defence Academy in Pune, Maharashtra, he joined the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, in 1985. There, he successfully finished his military training in June 1986 and received his commission as a second lieutenant in the 23rd battalion of the Rajput regiment and joined the Indian Army.
  • Thereafter, he attended the Young Officer’s (YOs) course at the Army War College in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh.
  • He was appointed as a company commander of his battalion when he became a major.
  • Katiyar, as a colonel, led his battalion in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir, as well as in Taksing, Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Later, he reported at the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington, where he served as an instructor.
  • Manoj Kumar Katiyar took charge of a Kashmir-centered Infantry Brigade following his promotion to the rank of brigadier.
  • Subsequently, he was assigned as an instructor with the Indian Military Training Team (IMTRAT) in Bhutan.
  • He has also served as Brigadier General Staff (BGS) at the headquarters of both 3 Corps and Central Command.
  • As a major general, he was posted at the Army Headquarters in New Delhi at the Military Operations Directorate.
  • After getting promoted to the rank of lieutenant general, Katiyar became the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the renowned 1 Corps, also known as the Strike Corps, on 5th April 2021. He succeeded Lt Gen Codanda Poovaiah Cariappa in this position.
