He had a very troubled childhood. His early childhood was shadowed by the war in the country.
His hometown, Slavonski Brod (on the border with Bosnia) came under immediate attack during Bosnian War in 1992.
After the war, Mario’s family fled to Ditzingen (near Stuttgart), Germany.
He fell in love with football in Germany. He joined a local youth team, TSF Ditzingen when he was just 6 years old.
In 1996, his family was denied to extend its stay in Germany and had to return back to Yugoslavia.
His talent then brought him to the Croatian capital, and he joined NK Zagreb.
In the summer of 2007, he was bought by the Croatian powerhouse Dinamo Zagreb. He finished his first season in the club with 12 goals and 11 assists in 29 matches.
On 10 September 2008, Mandzukic scored his first goal for Croatia.
On 14 July 2010, Mario signed for the German club, VfL Wolfsburg. In his two years at the club, he scored 20 goals in 56 matches for the club.
On 26 June 2012, Mario was bought by the German giants, Bayern Munich. He made his debut for the club on 24 July 2012.
After two successful seasons at Bayern, he signed a four year deal with Atletico Madrid on 10 July 2014. He scored 20 goals in 43 matches for the Spanish side.
On 22 June 2015, after just one year at Atletico, Mandzukic decided to join Juventus.
He has a dog named Leni. Mario adores him a lot and has even got his name knit on his football boots.
He has represented Croatia in international tournaments like UEFA Euro 2012, FIFA World 2014, UEFA Euro 2016 and FIFA World Cup 2018. He reached the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup with Croatia but lost to France by 4-2.
