Some Lesser Known Facts About Min Aung Hlaing
- Min Aung Hlaing was born in Minbu, Magway Region, Myanmar. Both his parents, Khin Hlaing and Hla Mu, are teachers from Dawei, Tanintharyi Region.
- When he was 5 years old the family relocated to Mandalay.
- He went to the Defence Services Academy and was accepted on his third attempt in 1974, as part of the 19th Intake.
- In 1977, he graduated from the academy. The students in his class at the time referred to him as “unremarkable” and quiet.
- He had a reserved personality and that is why many people stood aside from him.
- Following graduation, he enlisted in No. 313 Light Infantry Battalion in the No. 77 Light Infantry Division.
- His nickname was based on military term for cat faeces. He is said to have been close to the former prime minister of Thailand, General Prem Tinsulanonda, and regarded him as a father figure.
- Major was stationed at Battalion Officer Commanding, No. 369 Light Infantry Battalion, Homalin, where he imprisoned the pregnant wife of a sergeant whom he deemed a deserter.
- While conducting a routine inspection, a high-ranking officer, Colonel Kyaw Thu, found the woman, and ordered her immediate release, saying that the incident was “disgraceful”.
- As Rector in the Defence Services Academy he made several reports to the Military Appointment General for minor ‘rules violations’, including cadets riding motorcycles without helmets.
- An estimated number of those officers were demoted and were never promoted past the rank of Captain. As he moved up the ranks he gained a reputation for being a hardliner.
- He was surrounded by people who spoke about his leadership as that of a big man, who was not a team player or one who would listen to others.
- His son Aung Pyae Sone is the owner of several companies such as Sky One Construction Company and Aung Myint Mo Min Insurance Company.
- He is also a majority shareholder of Mytel, the nation’s telecoms company.
- In 2013, a no bid government permit, at a deeply discounted rate, for a 30 year lease for a high-end restaurant and art gallery was granted to Aung Pyae Sone, in the Yangon People’s Square and Park.
- Aung Pyae Sone is also the proprietor of A and M Mahar (Food and Drug Regulatory and Customs Clearance) Services for drugs and medical devices.
- In 2017, his daughter Khin Thiri Thet Mon established one of the biggest film production companies in the country, 7th Sense Creation.
- His daughter-in-law Myo Yadanar Htaik also established another entertainment company in the same year, called ‘Stellar Seven Entertainment’.
- Min Aung Hlaing is subject of US economic sanctions and in December 2020 the US Embassy in Yangon was brought into the spotlight for its cooperation with 7th Sense Creation.
- Myanma Economic Holdings Limited, the army’s holding company, is also a major shareholder of the army.
- He owned 5000 shares of a company and received 250,000 dollars in dividends each year for 2010 to 2011.
- He is a member of the conglomerate’s Patron Group. He, with his wife Kyu Kyu Hla and his astrologer Vasipake Sayadaw, set the Hti umbrella on the Htilominlo Temple in Bagan in February 2020.
- The name of the temple is ‘need the royal umbrella, need the King’.
- The ceremony was considered by many as a yadaya (ritual for seeking the blessings of God). He followed the path of mighty and powerful political leaders such as his former chief, Senior General Than Shwe.
- In March 2025, Min Aung Hlaing met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow and told him of a Buddhist prophecy that he connected with the Russian leader.
- The prophecy was that a rat king called Thawma would be born to the Russian people as their emperor and be a close ally with the kings of Burma, who were named at the time as Pyi Dik Yi and Kyi Thekkyi.
- The Buddha is said to have predicted that this rat king would be born as the emperor of the Russian people and that he will be a close friend of the kings of Burma, the latter of which were then Pyi Dik Yi and Kyi Thekkyi.
- He gave a copy of U Aung Zeya’s Biography, written in 1838 by U Saw, a Pali scholar, to Putin, which mentions the Rat King.
- He linked the prophecy with the strategic partnership between Russia and Myanmar at the present time and pointed out that the Buddha’s words had now been fulfilled in an “unusual way and an extraordinary way.
- He made headlines in May 2026 during his visit to India due to tension in Indian state Manipur.
- He is said to believe in the ideology of Ne Win and Burmese way to socialism.
