  • Sheikh Rehana grew up in a family with a political background in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
  • In 1971, during the Bangladesh Liberation War, Rehana, along with her family, was kept under house arrest in Dhanmondi by the Pakistan Army.

  • In 1975, while she, along with her sister Hasina, went to Germany to meet Hasina’s husband M. A. Wazed Miah in Karlsruhe, her other family members were killed in their home on 15 August in a military coup by the Bangladesh Army. Rehana was just 20 years old at that time.
  • Soon after the incident, the Indian authorities reached Germany to bring Sheikh Hasina, her husband, children, and sister Sheikh Rehana to India, where they were given political asylum.

  • Rehana, along with her sister and her sister’s family, lived on Delhi’s Pandara Road under a fake identity for some time. Later, she moved to London.
  • She helped her sister to form a public opinion abroad, demanding justice for their family. Rehana, along with her sister Hasina, campaigned in various European countries, seeking justice for their father. In 1979, Rehana held the first international conference in Sweden to call for an impartial trial on her father’s murder.
  • In 1981, Rehana, along with her sister Hasina, returned to Bangladesh, where her sister led the Bangladesh Awami League.
