When he was four years old, Siang Lu’s family moved from Malaysia to Brisbane in the 1990s.

The story of Ghost Cities is about a young man named Xiang who loses his job at the Chinese consulate in Sydney when people find out that he cannot speak Chinese and only uses Google Translate. He then moves to a strange, empty, large city in China, known as a ‘ghost city.’

Before winning the Miles Franklin Literary Award, Ghost Cities was shortlisted for many other prizes, like the ALS Gold Medal and the Russell Prize for Humour Writing.

The book was also a finalist in several Queensland Literary Awards, including the People’s Choice.
