Sumi Borah began learning dance when she was three years old under the guidance of Guru Ruplekha Borbora Das at Chaulkhowa Music College in Saguni Bari Gaon, Assam.

After completing her formal education, she taught dance for over nine years at Chaulkhowa Music College and other schools in Dibrugarh, such as Siksha Valley School and Nurture International School.

On 2 September 2024, Bishal Phukan, an Assamese singer and businessman, was arrested for a major stock market investment fraud. This led police to suspect Sumi Borah, his self-proclaimed sister, and Sumi’s husband, Tarkik Borah, as partners in the crime.

Sumi and Tarkik then went into hiding, with reports stating that they stayed in various places in Meghalaya and Nepal.

On 4 September 2024, police fastened their investigation and captured two people for helping the couple escape.

Tarkik’s brother, Amlan Borah, was arrested in connection with the scam on 11 September 2024. The next day, Sumi and Tarkik Borah were arrested by the Special Task Force in Dibrugarh when they were trying to surrender.
