Tika Sumpter grew up in Long Island, New York.

When she was a few years old, her parents got divorced and she, along with three of her six siblings, was raised by her mother. Two of her siblings were adopted.

Initially, her mother was a homemaker but after her divorce, she began working as a secretary and later went on to become a corrections officer. In an interview, Tika described her mother as a strict mother.

Her father once owned a restaurant. However, it didn’t last long.

Tika was a cheerleader during her high school.

As a teen, Tika began working at a movie theatre to support her mother. During that time, she often invited her mother to watch movies for free. She also treated her with popcorn and candy to make her feel relaxed.

In the year 2000, Tika began working as a model. She appeared in commercials for Hewlett-Packard and Liz Claiborne’s Curve fragrances.
